Though it was commonly claimed by the Mahinda Rajapakse

Though it was commonly claimed by the Mahinda Rajapakse Government that this war was won due to the efforts of then President Mahinda Rajapakse and his brother, Gotabhaya Rajapakse, the people of Sri Lanka knew that the true hero of this victory was none other than General Sarath Fonseka, the Commander of the of the Sri Lanka Army that defeated the ruthless LTTE terrorists and finally called a halt to this war. Having had a thus far exemplary military career, General Sarath Fonseka then decided to go into politics as a Presidential Candidate, vowing to free Sri Lanka from corruption, just as he had freed Sri Lanka from terrorism. Backed by the UNP and JVP, he would bring in good governance, and eliminate the corruption which was the hallmark of the Rajapakse regime. However, this election campaign of General Sarath Fonseka was attacked very  heavily by the Rajapakse Government, who engaged in a major mud slinging campaign against General Fonseka. The Government focused very strongly on attacking the son in law of General Fonseka, Danuna Tillakaratne, who they claimed was a major arms dealer. The Government run newspapers were full of stories about Danuna Tillakaratne, and the state radio channels also constantly broadcasted about Danuna Tillakaratne. The election results indicated that Mahinda Rajapakse had won, but most people who saw the Elections Commissioner releasing the results, full of fear and unable to look directly at cameras, suspected the election had been rigged. General Fonseka was arrested and Danuna Tillakaratne went into hiding. However through all of what happened, General Fonseka refused to give into the threats made and bribes offered by the Rajapakses, and was steadfast in his beliefs and his desire to end corruption and bring about a positive change to Mother Lanka.

Fast Forward towards July 2015 with the Rajapakses no longer in power, and we see that General (now Field Marshal) Sarath Fonseka and Danuna Tillakaratne are still campaigning to create a better Sri Lanka free from corruption. They are both contesting for the General Elections representing the Democratic Party from the COlombo District. Danuna Tillakaratne played an integral role in the General's Presidential Election campaign in 2010 and also has played an important, albeit silent role in furthering the political cause of the Democratic party since the party's inception. He too is committed to eradicate corruption, establish good governance and bring about economic prosperity to the motherland.

In one of his recent speeches, Danuna Tillakaratne made the following statement: “Since peace was established in Sri Lanka for the 2nd time in 2009, the country has not had much political stability or economic progress. Narrow thinking, careless talk, rabid nationalism, together with an irresponsible media continue to fan this discontent. To resolve this problem, which has now become extremely complex, positive action needs to be taken. This requires the need to think and talk with responsibility, for starters. It is only right thinking, constructive talk and dedicated work that will bring the expected results”.

Danuna Tillakaratne Emerges From Hiding and Contests in The 2015 General Elections

Danuna Tillakaratne became a household name in Sri Lanka after the 2010 Presidential Elections. His name was used by the Government in a major mud slinging campaign against General Sarath Fonseka during the 2010 Presidential Elections, and it was alleged that Danuna Tillakaratne was a major arms dealer, and that he profited by supplying arms and ammunition to the Sri Lanka army.

This was of course not true, because for many years before the end of the conflict in Sri Lanka, the Sri Lankan Government only purchased arms and ammunition though Lanka Logistics, a fully state owned outfit. Further examination of Danuna Tillakaratne’s history shows that he has never been an owner, a director, or even an employee of any company that supplies any equipment at all to the Sri Lankan Army or Sri Lankan Government.

However, Charges were brought, and interestingly, Danuna Tillakaratne went into hiding, and in response, the government launched one of the biggest manhunts ever undertaken in Sri Lankan history to capture him. Even more interestingly, Danuna Tillakaratne managed to evade capture for 5 years, despite the major state campaign to locate him, and the offer of a one million rupee reward for information leading to the capture of Danuna Tillkaratne. The fact that Danuna Tillakaratne managed to evade capture despite several public announcements made by the Secretary of Defense  Gotabhaya Rajapakse that it was only a matter of time before he was captured, elevated Danuna Tillakaratne to the status of folk hero in the eyes of his supporters.

Then again, very interestingly, just before the Presidential Elections of 2015, after having spent five years in hiding, Danuna Tillakaratne simply walked into a court room and surrendered. He was granted bail by the judge, and when the media asked him why he had chosen to make an appearance in court to surrender right before the Presidential Elections, he replied that it had been a gamble, that he surrendered because he figured the Government would not persecute him right before the elections, because if they did, they would lose more popularity with the people for taking political revenge. His gamble paid off, and Danuna Tillakaratne walked out of the court without being troubled by the police or any other Government personnel.

Danuna Tillakaratne is now contesting for a seat in Parliament in the Colombo District, representing the Democratic Party. Danuna Tillakaratne says it is time for a change for Sri Lanka, and that he can help usher in a new era of corruption free development for Sri Lanka.

Danuna Evades Capture

Although there has been a massive manhunt for Danuna Tillakaratne, the son in law of General Sarath Fonseka, who went into hiding following threats made to his life by the current regime, Danuna has so far been successful in evading capture. This situation is particularly embarrassing for the Secretary of Defense, Mr. Gotabhaya Rajapakse, who is personally overseeing the efforts to capture Danuna, and who has allocated several hundred personnel from the armed forces and police to the task of capturing Danuna. A massive poster campaign has also been carried out across the country, offering a reward of one million rupees to anyone proving information that would lead to the capture of Danuna.

Inside sources reveal that Mr. Gotabhaya Rajapakse, the brother of President Mahinda Rajapakse, has started taking punitive action against senior members of the armed forces and police due to their failure to capture Danuna Tillakaratne. Raids on several locations across the country have also been carried out, following tip offs about Danuna’s whereabouts made by members of the public who are interested in claiming the one million rupee reward. However, none of the raids carried out have been successful in locating Danuna. A close watch is also being kept at the Katunayaka International Airport, as well as at several sea ports around the country, to prevent Danuna from being able to leave the country.

It is interesting that Danuna continues to evade capture despite the large amount of state resources and personnel from the armed forces and police that have been allocated to the task of his capture. Danuna is known to be a resourceful and intelligent man and is also believed to be quite fit, being a former school rowing champion. He is also believed to have the support of large groups within the armed forces, who are loyal to General Sarath Fonseka and also to his father, Brigadier T G Tillakaratne a distinguished former officer of the Sri Lanka Army. Danuna is also believed to have the support of a large percentage of the general public, who voted for General Sarath Fonseka at the recently concluded Presidential elections. These supporters of General Sarath Fonseka are outraged at the treatment meted out to the General, who is currently being held captive despite there being no charges brought against him, as well as the treatment meted out to his son in law Danuna, as well as the rest of his family by the current regime, as acts of political revenge. They have vowed to Keep Danuna safe from the clutches of this oppressive regime.

Danuna Tillakaratne

My name is Danuna Tillakaratne and I will be contesting in the General Election enter Parliament form the Colombo District, representing the Democratic Party lead by Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka. I studied at Royal College Colombo, from grade one, up until my A Levels. I was a Senior Prefect at Royal College and was also awarded School Colours for rowing. After completing my A/L exams, I moved to the US for my studies, and earned a Degree in Management Information Systems from the University of Central Oklahoma. Following my graduation, I worked as an IT consultant at a Satellite Communications firm in the US.

You may be familiar with my story, following the Presidential Elections of 2010. I was framed by the former Government, one of their many acts of political revenge against Sarath Fonseka, who was my Father in Law at the time. I was advised to go into hiding to protect my life, and I spent 5 years on the run, being hunted by the Government. I learned a lot during my time in hiding. I realized importance of having a lawful, democratic Government that respects its citizens and their rights. I fully appreciated the danger of having a Government run by a single family who treated the country as their own property, and disregarded the law of the land, changing the law and even the constitution of the country to suit their needs and fulfil their greed. I also realized how difficult life is for the common man in Sri Lanka – during my 5 years spent hiding from the Government, I was sheltered and helped by many of these poor people, and lived as one with them. I spent time with people and families all over Sri Lanka, with people of all races, religions, and economic backgrounds. I was very humbled that they assisted me, with the full knowledge that the Government would destroy their lives as well if they were found to have been sheltering me, because they believed in the cause championed by Sarath Fonseka, for a lawful, democratic Sri Lanka, free from corruption.

Like Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka, I too believe Sri Lanka needs change. But as we all know, during elections, everybody talks about change. However, if you really look at the situation, it is clearly apparent that the main political parties are not ready for real change. This is why we have to think seriously and be very selective about how we cast out valuable vote. We need to identify people who can create positive change, taking into account their experience backgrounds.

Until politicians change their thinking and working patterns, that long awaited change will never come. We have all been disappointed with politicians in the past, who came to power by making promises to the people that they failed to keep. We need a new system, with honest politicians representing political parties that are devoid of corruption, internal conflicts and self-serving ideas and ideals. We need change. Not just for ourselves, but to create a safe, democratic country for future generations.

Our society faces many problems. Drugs were brought into the country by prominent individuals with no action being taken against them, which has lead to many young lives being destroyed. Honest businesses suffered because contracts were awarded to unscrupulous businessmen for commissions. Huge loans were taken at exorbitant interest rates to fund vanity projects that serve no purpose to our country.

We need to change this. We need a Government that is transparent and accountable to the citizens of this country. We need justice for all. This is the change I hope to bring in through the Democratic Party. Please vote for me and help me make Sri Lanka all it can be.
