Danuna Tillakaratne

02:31

My name is Danuna Tillakaratne and I will be contesting in the General Election enter Parliament form the Colombo District, representing the Democratic Party lead by Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka. I studied at Royal College Colombo, from grade one, up until my A Levels. I was a Senior Prefect at Royal College and was also awarded School Colours for rowing. After completing my A/L exams, I moved to the US for my studies, and earned a Degree in Management Information Systems from the University of Central Oklahoma. Following my graduation, I worked as an IT consultant at a Satellite Communications firm in the US.

You may be familiar with my story, following the Presidential Elections of 2010. I was framed by the former Government, one of their many acts of political revenge against Sarath Fonseka, who was my Father in Law at the time. I was advised to go into hiding to protect my life, and I spent 5 years on the run, being hunted by the Government. I learned a lot during my time in hiding. I realized importance of having a lawful, democratic Government that respects its citizens and their rights. I fully appreciated the danger of having a Government run by a single family who treated the country as their own property, and disregarded the law of the land, changing the law and even the constitution of the country to suit their needs and fulfil their greed. I also realized how difficult life is for the common man in Sri Lanka – during my 5 years spent hiding from the Government, I was sheltered and helped by many of these poor people, and lived as one with them. I spent time with people and families all over Sri Lanka, with people of all races, religions, and economic backgrounds. I was very humbled that they assisted me, with the full knowledge that the Government would destroy their lives as well if they were found to have been sheltering me, because they believed in the cause championed by Sarath Fonseka, for a lawful, democratic Sri Lanka, free from corruption.

Like Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka, I too believe Sri Lanka needs change. But as we all know, during elections, everybody talks about change. However, if you really look at the situation, it is clearly apparent that the main political parties are not ready for real change. This is why we have to think seriously and be very selective about how we cast out valuable vote. We need to identify people who can create positive change, taking into account their experience backgrounds.

Until politicians change their thinking and working patterns, that long awaited change will never come. We have all been disappointed with politicians in the past, who came to power by making promises to the people that they failed to keep. We need a new system, with honest politicians representing political parties that are devoid of corruption, internal conflicts and self-serving ideas and ideals. We need change. Not just for ourselves, but to create a safe, democratic country for future generations.

Our society faces many problems. Drugs were brought into the country by prominent individuals with no action being taken against them, which has lead to many young lives being destroyed. Honest businesses suffered because contracts were awarded to unscrupulous businessmen for commissions. Huge loans were taken at exorbitant interest rates to fund vanity projects that serve no purpose to our country.

We need to change this. We need a Government that is transparent and accountable to the citizens of this country. We need justice for all. This is the change I hope to bring in through the Democratic Party. Please vote for me and help me make Sri Lanka all it can be.
