Though it was commonly claimed by the Mahinda Rajapakse

03:54

Though it was commonly claimed by the Mahinda Rajapakse Government that this war was won due to the efforts of then President Mahinda Rajapakse and his brother, Gotabhaya Rajapakse, the people of Sri Lanka knew that the true hero of this victory was none other than General Sarath Fonseka, the Commander of the of the Sri Lanka Army that defeated the ruthless LTTE terrorists and finally called a halt to this war. Having had a thus far exemplary military career, General Sarath Fonseka then decided to go into politics as a Presidential Candidate, vowing to free Sri Lanka from corruption, just as he had freed Sri Lanka from terrorism. Backed by the UNP and JVP, he would bring in good governance, and eliminate the corruption which was the hallmark of the Rajapakse regime. However, this election campaign of General Sarath Fonseka was attacked very  heavily by the Rajapakse Government, who engaged in a major mud slinging campaign against General Fonseka. The Government focused very strongly on attacking the son in law of General Fonseka, Danuna Tillakaratne, who they claimed was a major arms dealer. The Government run newspapers were full of stories about Danuna Tillakaratne, and the state radio channels also constantly broadcasted about Danuna Tillakaratne. The election results indicated that Mahinda Rajapakse had won, but most people who saw the Elections Commissioner releasing the results, full of fear and unable to look directly at cameras, suspected the election had been rigged. General Fonseka was arrested and Danuna Tillakaratne went into hiding. However through all of what happened, General Fonseka refused to give into the threats made and bribes offered by the Rajapakses, and was steadfast in his beliefs and his desire to end corruption and bring about a positive change to Mother Lanka.

Fast Forward towards July 2015 with the Rajapakses no longer in power, and we see that General (now Field Marshal) Sarath Fonseka and Danuna Tillakaratne are still campaigning to create a better Sri Lanka free from corruption. They are both contesting for the General Elections representing the Democratic Party from the COlombo District. Danuna Tillakaratne played an integral role in the General's Presidential Election campaign in 2010 and also has played an important, albeit silent role in furthering the political cause of the Democratic party since the party's inception. He too is committed to eradicate corruption, establish good governance and bring about economic prosperity to the motherland.

In one of his recent speeches, Danuna Tillakaratne made the following statement: “Since peace was established in Sri Lanka for the 2nd time in 2009, the country has not had much political stability or economic progress. Narrow thinking, careless talk, rabid nationalism, together with an irresponsible media continue to fan this discontent. To resolve this problem, which has now become extremely complex, positive action needs to be taken. This requires the need to think and talk with responsibility, for starters. It is only right thinking, constructive talk and dedicated work that will bring the expected results”.
